Canal Clean Sweep events planned

Local groups and individuals can assist New York State Canal Corp. staff for the Canal Clean Sweep, scheduled for Friday through Sunday.

In recognition of Earth Day, community groups and others are encouraged to help at spring cleaning events to “prepare and beautify the canal system and Canalway Trail,” a news release from the Canal Corporation said.

“The Canal Clean Sweep is a great way for community groups and individuals to show their pride in our historic Canal System by pitching in with their neighbors,” said Brian U. Stratton, director of the New York State Canal Corp., in the news release. “We again encourage one and all to join in on the clean-up effort of our magnificent canals and Canalway Trail.”

In Montgomery County, several events are going on Friday and Saturday:

  • On Friday at 9:30 a.m., the Liberty ARC and Friends of Fort Plain will clean up in and around Haslett Park.
  • On Saturday at 9 a.m., the Friends of Fort Plain will meet at the intersection of Route 80 and a bike path in Fort Plain to clean the bike path east and west of Fort Plain, including the Otsquago Creek outcrop and the Otsquago Club road.
  • At the same time, Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will join with General Electric and the Duanesburg School District to clean and clear the banks of the original and enlarged Erie Canals at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site.
  • At 11 a.m., the Canajoharie-Palatine Chamber of Commerce will clean the grounds and pavilion of the Riverfront Park in Canajoharie.
