Sister to Sister event scheduled May 21

JOHNSTOWN – The Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its 14th annual Sister to Sister Summit on May 21 at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Registration materials for this year’s “Tech Savvy” summit for middle school girls have been distributed to schools in Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery counties.

The event will provide hand-on experiences in a college environment to give girls the confidence and the motivation they need to take math, science and technology classes in school, a news release said.

Registration will be handled though school guidance officers. Due to limited space, 15 girls from each school will be invited to attend. Girls attending can chose three workshops from a selection of 12. College faculty members will facilitate the workshops.

The workshop topics will include robotics, nonotechnology, medical diagnosing, and designing homes and landscapes.

The capnote speaker for this year’s summit will be Johnstown City Engineer Chandra Cotter.

Cotter will discuss the interests she had at a young age that steered her toward engineering, and what the path was like from high school and into her career.

The registration fee for the Tech Savvy Summit is $8 for each student and adult attending. The deadline for registration is April 24. Those registering after April 24 will be charged a late registration fee of $10 per person.
