Former pharmacy owner to announce Johnstown mayoral bid

JOHNSTOWN – The former owner of the Broadalbin Pharmacy will announce his candidacy Thursday night as a Democratic candidate for mayor, anonymous party sources said today.

Sources said pharmacist Michael Julius of 134 E. Montgomery St. – a state Democratic committeeman from the city’s Third Ward – will announce he’s running for mayor at a press conference at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn.

The Fulton County Democratic Committee said today it’s conducting the press conference to announce a Democratic candidate for mayor.

Committee Chairman Ed Jasewicz said today the party doesn’t want to release the name until Thursday night.

“I have been asked by the candidate not to give his name,” he said. “It’s a very qualified candidate.”

Sources highly connected to the county Democratic party – who wished to remain anonymous – said today the candidate is Julius.

Jasewicz said the candidate came to the committee expressing an interest in the mayor’s post.

Mayor Sarah Slingerland, a Republican, announced March 19 she’s stepping down this year after two terms. The mayor’s position is a four-year term and pays $18,241 annually.

Julius co-owned the former Broadalbin Pharmacy on North Main Street in that village with his pharmacist wife, Catherine Julius, until closing it in May 2010.

At the time, the then-60-year-old Julius told The Leader-Herald he and his wife were retiring. He said services from his business were transferred to Rite Aid Pharmacy on Route 30 in Amsterdam.

The Fulton County Republican Committee hasn’t yet announced a GOP candidate for mayor.

“No one has stepped forward,” committee Chairwoman Sue McNeil said today.

She said Johnstown Republican Committee Chairman Russell Martin is “working hard” to find someone to run for mayor.

In addition to Slingerland, another prominent Republican who took himself out of the running last month was Republican 2nd Ward Councilman Chris Foss.
