Dorothy A. Callahan

Mrs. Dorothy A. Callahan, 82, of Lassellsville, New York, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the comfort of her own home with her family by her side.

Dorothy was born on December 16, 1930, in Flushing, New York, a daughter of the late Herman and Anna (Wagner) Schlang. She was educated at Richmond Hill High School and graduated with the class of 1947. In her later years, she went on to attend SUNY at Old Westbury. She earned a degree in liberal arts and graduated with the class of 1985.

On January 19, 1952, Dorothy was united in marriage to William J. Callahan Sr. in Ridgewood, New York. They shared a blessed union of 60 years together until Bill’s passing on November 18, 2012. Together the couple raised their seven children in Stewart Manor, Long Island, New York. They moved to Lassellsville, New York in 1992.

Dorothy was employed as a substitute teacher and taught at various schools around the Fulton, Montgomery and Herkimer counties including, St. Johnsville, Canajoharie, Oppenheim, Dolgeville, and Herkimer County BOCES. She worked until November of 2012.

In her past time, Dorothy enjoyed caring for her home in Lassellsville, New York, decorating, collecting antiques and memorabilia. She also was an avid reader and writer of short stories. Dorothy was part of a writing club in St. Johnsville, a progressive dinner group, and the Oppenheim Historical Society.

Dorothy was a devoted Catholic. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Dolgeville, N.Y. and Our Lady of Hope in Fort Plain, N.Y. She also served as a eucharistic minister and traveled to St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center to serve the eucharist to residents. While living on Long Island she enjoyed working for the Cradle of Aviation, Long Island’s air and space craft museum. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, co-workers and students.

She is survived by: her loving children, Patricia A. Callahan and her husband, Sergio Arbustini of Dolgeville, N.Y., Geraldine A. Franck of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, Carolyn A. Fitzgerald and her husband, Dennis of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., Christopher J. Callahan and his wife, Kathleen of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Martin J. Callahan and his wife, Karen Brittain of St. Johnsville, N.Y., Rebecca A. Gamba and her husband, Franco of Old Bridge, N.J.; sixteen special grandchildren and two cherished great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Paul F. Callahan of Garden City, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved son, William “Billy” J. Callahan Jr. on September 27, 2010.

Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours that will be held today, April 10, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 31 N. Helmer Avenue, Dolgeville, New York, with the Rev. Quy N. Vo, officiating and Rev. Dennis Murphy officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, where Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her husband, William.
