Anthony C. Aversa

Mr. Anthony C. Aversa, 84, formerly of Fonda, N.Y., passed away peacefully Sunday morning, March 24, 2013, at the St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Frankfort, N.Y. on September 28, 1928, to the late Jack and Rose Puzzilla Aversa, Mr. Aversa was a 1945 graduate of Frankfort High School. He served in the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War, attaining the rank of corporal. His active service ended when he was severely wounded in combat, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

After his military service, he moved to New York City to attend college. He spent a year at Columbia University, then trained as an opera singer at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a bachelor of arts in music and a master’s degree in music education.

In 1960, Mr. Aversa relocated with his wife and young son, Jack to Fonda to teach music and to direct the chorus in the junior high (later middle school) and high school for the annual Christmas and spring concerts. He retired from the Fonda-Fultonville School District in 1985.

Mr. Aversa was a member of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic parish in Fonda, and for a number of years directed the singing of hymns at Sunday Mass. He belonged to the Disabled American Veterans, served on the Board of Trustees for the Frothingham Free Library and enjoyed tending to his garden, listening to opera and watching sports, especially the New York Giants and the Yankees.

He married Rose Davis Aversa on July 21, 1956; she died on September 22, 2009. Survivors include: his four children, Jack (Rosemary Jung) Aversa of Malta, N.Y., Catherine (Mark) Roberts of Scotia, N.Y., Martin (Yulia) Aversa of Vienna, Austria, Nancy (Ken) Gutelius of Lake Orion, Mich.; one sister, Nancy M. Aversa of Frankfort; one sister-in-law, Pauline Davis of Upper Montclair, N.J.; and a brother in-law, George (Margherita) Davis of Wanaque, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Cassandra, Jacqueline and Felicia Aversa, Matthew and Erin Roberts, Elizabeth Aversa, and Hannah and Danielle Gutelius; and special family friend, Sonomi (Endo) Nakamura; a former exchange student from Japan, who remains close to the family. He was predeceased by four brothers, Martin, John, Louis II and Louis III.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Saturday, April 13, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, NY. A Memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, Broadway, Fonda, N.Y., with Father Patrick Gallagher OFM, Conv. as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Frothingham Free Library, 28 W. Main Street, Fonda, NY 12068-0746 or to St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church.
