Woodend to swim at NCAA meet
ONEONTA – Six members of the Hartwick men’s and women’s swimming teams will be competing at the NCAA Championships beginning today in Shenandoah, Texas, at the Conroe Natatorium.
“I’m really excited for the kids,” head coach Dale Rothenberger said in a news release. “My hope is that they can reach All-America status and they are certainly capable of achieving top 20 swims.”
The six swimmers are Jade Woodend (Visalia, Calif.), Kenny Kleso (Milford, Pa.), Lydon Schultz (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), Miles Blaney (New York), Brad Ranson (Pennington, N.J.), and Cory Perez (Miami, Fla.). They will be competing in a total of 16 events.
Woodend, a Mayfield graduate, is the first female swimmer to participate since Gayle Gregory and Julie Landmann last qualified in 2004.
“Her best events are the 50 and 100 free and my goal for her is to swim faster and take a tenth of a second off her final times,” Rothenberger said in the release.
Woodend will compete in the 50 freestyle today. She seeded seventh in the event with a time of 23.61 seconds.
On Thursday, Woodend will compete in the 200 freestyle. She is seeded 21st with a time of 1:52.49.
