Sea Rams qualify to compete at Junior Olympics in Troy
TROY – A total of 14 swimmers from the Amsterdam Sea Rams youth swim team achieved qualifying times for the Adirondack Gold Short Course Championships meet, which is also known as the Junior Olympics, to be held Friday through Sunday at the Robison Pool at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.
To qualify for the meet, swimmers must have achieved cut-off times during Adirondack USA sanctioned meets held throughout the Capital District during the 2012-2013 season and fulfill the minimum meet requirement. The swimmers have qualified in various events and distances in the breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, freestyle and individual medley. A swimmer is limited to three events per day plus relays, but many of the Sea Rams swimmers have actually qualified for more events. The Sea Rams have a number of swimmers in good position to perform well in their age groups.
Tim Lin will swim for Amsterdam in the 8-and-younger age group.
Jonas Barkevich, Daniel Dylong, Trevor Dzikowicz, Evan Iannuzzi and Malick Lusack will swim in the 9-10 age group for the Sea Rams, while Brianna Ziobro will swim in the 11-12 age group.
Trevor Askew, Kayla Dzikowicz and Erica Wagner will swim in the 13-14 age group for Amsterdam.
Erica Askew, Tyler Askew, Jordan Hammons and Matt Swart will swim in the 15-18 age group for the Sea Rams.
In addition, Erica Askew has qualified for the 2013 USA Swimming Speedo Championships to be held March 21 to 24 at the Erie Community College Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo. Athletes needed to meet specific qualifying time standards to compete in this meet. Qualifying times must have been achieved in USA Swimming sanctioned, approved, and observed competition.
The swimmers are coached by Mike Schanthal, Jef Martin and Marie Thomas.
