John J. Bieniek
John J. Bieniek, 81, of McKay Road, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility. Born on August 13, 1931, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Anthoni and Anna Dykla Bieniek. He was a lifelong area resident and attended Amsterdam schools. He was a member of the former Church of St. John the Baptist.
From 1954 until 1971 he owned the McDonald Dairy Farm, also during this time he served as a town of Amsterdam councilman until 1973. He later held the position of town of Amsterdam highway superintendent from 1973 until his retirement in 1990. He was also a member of the town of Amsterdam Democratic Club and the Fort Johnson Fire Department.
On September 11, 1954, he married Helen Kowalczyk Bieniek and celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Survivors include his wife; sons, John “Jack” Bieniek and his wife, Joann of Queensbury, N.Y. and Terry Bieniek and his wife, Barbara of Fort Johnson, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Kristen Bieniek Houghton and her husband, Jeff, Nathaniel Bieniek and his wife, Elizabeth and Cory Nicosia and her husband, Rafael; and great-granddaughter, Marley; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph Bieniek, Clara Bieniek Balbian, Edward Bieniek and Bernard Bieniek.
Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
