ITHACA – In his first season of running indoor track, Amsterdam sophomore Izaiah Brown won a state championship.

Brown turned in a time of 34.38 to win the 300-meter dash at the New York State Public High School indoor track and field championships Saturday at Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University.

Brown won his preliminary event with a time of 34.70 and beat Diamonte Corley of William Floyd (34.68) and Eastchester’s Jon Alkins (34.69) for the championship.

Brown’s time of 34.38 broke the state record for sophomores of 35.41 held by Brian Susser of Colonie since 1999.

Gloversville’s John Knox III also had success at the state championships, placing ninth in the 3,200-meter run with his time of 9:29.59.

Knox, a senior, led several laps early in the race before eventual champion Sibby Hanson of Arlington made his move to the front at the 1,200-meter mark.

“John ran a gutsy race against a highly competitive field,” Gloversville coach Josh Herod said. “He battled through the last mile taking spots back and finished hard. He definitely gave what he had. He will be back for the outdoor season and ready to go.”

Knox was also selected by the coaches as the recipient of the Section II sportsmanship award and represented the area in the meets opening ceremonies.
