Shirley M. May

Shirley M. May, age 81, met with her Angels on Tuesday, February, 26, 2013, in Gloversville, N.Y. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Julia Nickloy Dingman; her infant son, Kevin Zimmerman; and her sister, Barbara Gisondi.

Shirley dedicated her life and her heart to her children, Mark Zimmerman (Karen) of Escondido, Calif., Brenda Zimmerman-Hoffstetter (Michael) of Albany, N.Y., and Kenneth May (Amy) of Clermont, Fla. She also leaves behind her four beloved grandchildren, Luke and Maria Zimmerman, and Jorjia and Michael May; her devoted niece, Debra Roice; and dedicated nephew, Dan Roice; a special friend and caregiver, Ella Mae Cammarere; and a special friend, Joyce Bennett; as well as several fun-loving cousins.

Shirley was born in Gloversville in 1931 and graduated from Mayfield High School, class of 1949. She was proud to have worked at the Grandoe Glove Corp. for many years. In addition, she was an expert seamstress, a gifted soprano soloist and the New York Yankees’ number one fan since her childhood.

Shirley raised her family in Mayfield where she relished the area’s splendors. She loved gardening in the spring, the lake in the summer and cross-country skiing and snow machining in the winter, always, with her children by her side. Her heart was always full of love and her cookie jar was always full of homemade treats. She was an active member of the Mayfield community and the Mayfield Methodist Church for many years. She especially enjoyed being a long-term member of the church choir. Later in life, she became a member of the Bleecker Community Church.

Shirley certainly enjoyed her life and her family. She always looked forward to her biweekly card club with her cousins, her numerous vacations with her children and her weekly lunch dates with her friends. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on March 10 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a service will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Kathy L. Reese officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Bleecker Community Church, 503 County Highway 112, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pinewest Plaza, Suite 204, Albany, NY 12205.
