Beatrice ‘Bea’ Bowers
Beatrice “Bea” Bowers, age 81, of Johnstown, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Mountain Valley Hospice House, Gloversville, following a long illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 2, 1931. Demonstrating a sense of adventure, in the late 1950s she journeyed to Japan for work as a U.S. government civil servant and occasional stage actor. Later, Bea worked occasionally as a medical secretary.
Bea then volunteered her time and talents in service to her community. She was a life member of the Johnstown Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (JAVAC); a member of the Johnstown Lioness Club, including a term as president; and she also provided assistance at several American Red Cross blood drives. Bea was a feisty soul with a well-developed sense of determination. She enjoyed travel with family and friends as long as she was able and was an avid knitter and a formidable cribbage player.
During her time on the Japanese stage, she met her future husband, David Bowers of Johnstown. On December 19, 1959, they were united in marriage until his untimely passing in 1987. His early demise weighed heavily on Bea for her entire life; but her family expects they have now happily renewed their spirited discussions comparing navy blue to black, bargaining over another peach cobbler and planning their next road-trip.
Survivors include her son, Mark (Crystal) Bowers of Virginia Beach, Va.; her daughter, Rebecca Bowers of Johnstown; a sister, Jean Schwartz of Peekskill, New York; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and all the dear friends throughout her life.
Friends and family may call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Dr. Rev. R.W. Williams officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, New York 12078.
