Dolgeville wrestlers post solid showings

SYRACUSE – The Dolgeville wrestling team turned in a solid effort Saturday at the Section III Division II Championships at the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College.

The Blue Devils had nine wrestlers in competition at the Division II (small-school) tourney and five placed in the top six.

Danny Fox, the No. 4 seed, eked out a 1-0 win over second-seeded Ryan O’Rourke of Adirondack in the 106-pound finals.

Fox, who improved to 35-2 on the season, used a last-second escape to score the win in the third overtime period.

Fox, a sophomore, won by technical fall over Seth Gilbert of Phoenix in his first match before posted a 6-0 win over Adirondack’s Brandon Gaylord in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Fox rolled to a 13-0 major decision over top-seeded Hunter Owen of Morrisville-Eaton to reach the championship match.

Noah Handy (99), Andrew Dillenbeck (113) and Kasey Foster (182) all placed third for Dolgeville.

Handy defeated Herkimer’s Taylor Philpotts 5-3 in his first match and posted a 6-4 win over Hannibal’s Dustin Ouellette in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Handy lost 6-0 to Adirondack’s Derek Spann, who went on win the 99-pound title.

Handy bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a 10-0 major decision over South Jefferson’s Jared Carroll.

In the consolation finals, Handy posted a 9-4 decision over Ilion’s Tanner Cook to place third. Handy, a sophomore, finished the season with a 33-8 record.

Dillenbeck, a junior, pinned Mount Markham’s Nathan Weeks in 4:28 in the first round before pinning Lowville’s Connor Steria in 1:43 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Dillenbeck dropped a 6-3 decision to Port Byron’s Austin Parker.

Dillenbeck rebounded by pinning Marcellus’ Zach Ruggles in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation finals, Dillenbeck posted a 3-1 decision over Steria to place third. Dillenbeck finished his season with a 16-7 record.

Foster pinned Herkimer’s Dan Appley in his first match before losing to South Jefferson’s Logan LaFlamme, 5-4, in the semifinals.

In the consolation semifinals, Foster won by injury default over Tim Gandino of Phoenix.

Foster, a sophomore, posted a 9-4 win over Holland Patent’s Taylor Short in the consolation finals to place third. Foster finished his season with a 32-11 overall record.

Ben Nastovski (120) also earned a podium spot for Dolgeville, placing sixth.

Nastovski, a sophomore, pinned Cato-Meridian’s Dylan Bortle in 45 seconds in his first match before posting a 10-0 major decision over South Jefferson’s Adam Hutchinson in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Nastovski dropped a 4-3 decision to Cooperstown’s Mike Boyle. Boyle went on to win the 120-pound title.

In the consolation semifinals and finals, Nastovski lost by injury default to Phoenix’s Brad Dietz and Ilion’s Dan Sportello, respectively, to place sixth. Nastovski finished the season with a 33-6 record.

Triston Engle (152) went 1-2 for the Blue Devils to finish his sophomore season at 40-4.

Engle won his first match by technical fall over Camden’s Chad Finch before losing to Homer’s Nick Petrie, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. Petrie went on to finish third. In his first consolation-round match, Engle lost by default to General Brown’s Peter Will who went onto place sixth.

Tyler Richards (138), Richard Lyon (160) and Jimmy Doolittle (170) also competed for Dolgeville. All three went 0-1 on the day.

Richards 3-2 to Homer’s Matt Norris who finished sixth. Richards, a senior, finished the season with a 17-20 record.

Lyon, a sophomore, lost by default to Adirondack’s Coty Lutz to finish his season at 31-11.

Doolittle lost to Holland Patent’s Brandon Lake by pinfall, finishing his season with a 21-18 overall record.

The winners of each weight class advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany on Feb. 22 and 23. Wildcard spots for the event will be awarded later this week.
