Braves rout Cobleskill-Richmondville, 64-31
FONDA The Fonda-Fultonville Braves wasted little time establishing a stronghold in Tuesday’s Colonial Council game against Cobleskill-Richmondville.
Although the Bulldogs controlled the tip, Fonda-Fultonville’s Luke Calkins stole the ball and drove to the basket to trigger a game-opening 6-0 run.
The Braves did not let up and outscored Cobleskill-Richmondville 20-5 in the opening period en route to a 64-31 Colonial Council victory at Fonda-Fultonville High School.
“After that first steal and going down for a layup, it just seemed like everybody relaxed,” Fonda-Fultonville coach Eric Wilson said. “I don’t know what our shooting percentage was, but it was pretty good tonight. We just looked more relaxed shooting and had a better rhythm tonight.”
After Calkins’ game-opening steal-and-drive, Will Turner and Zac Nowak took control under the basket, scoring six first-quarter points apiece.
Fonda-Fultonville continued to roll early in the second period, putting up 10 unanswered points from four different players to extend its lead to 30-5.
Brad Koeberle, who posted all six of the Bulldogs’ second-quarter points, broke Cobleskill’s scoreless drought by converting a free throw with 3 minutes left in the half.
Ryan Derby kept the Braves’ momentum going into the second half by connecting for 10 of his 13 points in the third period.
With J.J. Boulet delivering seven points, the Bulldogs outscored Fonda-Fultonville 12-9 in the final frame to put the final score at 64-31.
Koeberle finished with a team-high 10 points for Cobleskill-Richmondville, while Boulet had seven and Greg Phelan added five.
Turner scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down five rebounds in limited playing time. Derby finished with 13 points, while Nowak contributed nine points and five rebounds and Jake Sammons added seven rebounds, three steals and six points. All nine Braves who suited up for Tuesday’s game scored.
“I don’t think any game is relaxing, but it was good to see the kids come out and play with some intensity,” Wilson said. “I thought coming into this game that we had the advantage but you always worry about taking a team for granted because of their record. I thought we did a nice job tonight.”
Fonda-Fultonville (7-9 overall, 5-7 Colonial) will take to the road Friday to play division-leading Watervliet before closing out its regular season at home Tuesday against Cohoes.
