Area nordic skiers post solid showings
WARRENSBURG – The Mayfield boys and girls nordic ski teams both finished sixth Friday in the Guilderland Invitational at Cronin’s Golf Resort.
Mayfield’s Tom McClellan led the area boys finishers, placing seventh in the 10k skate race with a time of 39:30.
Shenendehowa’s Austin Huneck won the boys race with a time of 37:12. Queensbury’s Ben Anderson (37:39) was second and Saratoga Springs’ Seth Mares (37:52) was third.
Scotia-Glenville won the boys team title with 22 points, while Queensbury was one point back in second with 23 points.
Mayfield was sixth with 45 points, while Johnstown was seventh with 82 points.
Mayfield’s Mitch Akowicz (41:21) was 14th, Brent Gray (42:08) was 24th, Austin Davis (44:56) was 34th and Ryan Bumpus (47:53) was 40th for the Panthers.
Eric Brower led Johnstown, placing 12th with a time of 41:09 Cameron Roten (43:40) was 29th for the Sir Bills and Jack Brabant (50:31) was 41st.
Mayfield’s Lidija Nikollaj was the area’s top girls finisher, placing fifth with a time of 13:40 in the 5k skate race.
Queensbury’s Megan Kellogg won the girls race with a time of 13:02, while Lake George’s Emma Underwood (13:16) was second.
Queensbury won the girls team title with 22 points, while Scotia-Glenville was second with 25 points. Guilderland and Mayfield finished tied with 42 points, but Guilderland took fifth by virtue of a tiebreaker, leaving the Lady Panthers in sixth. Johnstown (96) was seventh and Canajoharie (101) was eighth.
Emily Cromie was 15th for Mayfield with a time of 15:48, Hanna Cromie (16:34) was 22nd and Allie Miller (17:34) was 33rd.
Quincey Brabant led Johnstown, placing 25th with a time of 16:46. Morgan Swedick (17:22) was 31st for the Lady Bills, Madison Smrtic (19:29) was 40th and Hannah Chamberlain (20:42) was 42nd.
Catie Corrigan paced Canajoharie with a 26th-place finish in a time of 17:00. Rosemary Trahan (18:41) was 37th for the Lady Cougars, while Paige Shovelton (19:03) was 38th.
