Braves fall to Albany Academy on Senior Night

FONDA – In its final match before competing in the Section II Class C Tournament, the Fonda-Fultonville wrestling team came up short in a Colonial Council match against Albany Academy on Thursday.

The Cadets won eight of the 12 weight classes that were contested on their way to a 44-21 win over the Braves.

Fonda-Fultonville was hampered by three forfeits, while three weight classes went without a match due to forfeits by both teams.

“We had a chance because they gave up a few forfeits as well,” Fonda-Fultonville coach Matthew Lewis said. “We didn’t wrestle real well tonight. I don’t have any excuses, though.”

Kyle Gray put Fonda-Fultonville in front early, pinning Scott Peterson in 1:12 at 99 pounds.

“We got off to a nice start with Kyle [Gray] getting a pin,” Lewis said.

After a double forfeit at 106 pounds, the Cadets reeled off six straight wins to take a 35-6 lead.

Matt Morris started the surge, defeating Fonda-Fultonville’s Kelsey Gray by technical fall, outscoring her 16-0 in 2:48.

Zach Zebrowski (120) and Jay Kindlon (126) followed with back-to-back pins of the Braves’ Thomas TenEyck and Jackson Simpson in 2:18 and 1:37, respectively.

Sam DeLarge (132) and Sean Romanski (138) both won by forfeit for the Cadets, while Zeke Thomas pinned Fonda-Fultonville’s Jake Boyer in 2:57 at 145 pounds to make it 35-6.

Ryan Park slowed the Albany Academy momentum with a 5-0 win over Ryan Scotto at 152 pounds.

In the match of the night, the Cadets’ Jared Novotny used two backpoints at the buzzer to force overtime with Caleb TenEyck. In the extra session, Novotny scored a takedown to earn a 6-4 victory.

In his final home match, Fonda-Fultonville senior Richard Bagley pinned Nick Anyuegbunam in 43 seconds at 170 pounds.

Albany Academy’s Will Paulsey picked up a forfeit win at 182 pounds to push the Cadets’ lead to 44-15.

After double forfeits at 195 and 220 pounds, Fonda-Fultonville senior Eric Moyer closed the match by pinning Ahil Dawoodani in 4:41 to make the final score 44-21.

“I’m happy that Eric [Moyer] and Richard [Bagley] were able to win in their final home match,” Lewis said. “It’s always nice for your seniors to get a win on senior night.”

Fonda-Fultonville is off until Feb. 2 when it will compete in the Section II Class C Tournament at Hoosick Falls.

“We’ve got a week and a half to get ready for sectionals,” Lewis said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Albany Academy will compete at the Big 10 Invitational on Saturday at Albany High School before competing at the Section II Class D Tournament at Warrensburg on Feb. 2.

“We’re just gearing up for sectionals,” Albany Academy coach Kevin Grupe said. “We’re focused on the prize at the end of the season.”
