Helen R. Stanton

Helen R. Stanton, 93, formerly of Fonda, N.Y., passed away Friday evening, January 18, 2013, at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home in Gloversville.

Born in the town of Mohawk, N.Y., on March 25, 1919, a daughter of the late Edward B. and Charlotte Veeder Roickle. Helen grew up in Fonda and was a 1936 graduate of Fonda High School. She went on to graduate from the former Albany Teachers College in 1940 and later received her master’s in education from the University of Buffalo in 1962. She resided for 45 years in Colden, N.Y., returning to her home town in 1995.

Helen was employed for 23 years as a teacher for the Griffith Institute and Central School System in Springville, N.Y. She was a member and was very involved in the New York State Teacher’s Association and worked hard as a lobbyist for retired teachers. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star in Fonda-Fultonville and the Children of the American Revolution. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed crafts, sewing, knitting and reading. Mrs. Stanton was a member of the Fonda Reformed Church in Fonda, N.Y.

She married Fred S. Stanton on April 1, 1942. He passed away on August 23, 1987.

Survivors include her three daughters, Christine S. Littrell of Calais, Maine, Sara K. Stanton of Lantzville, British Columbia, Canada and Mary L. Stanton and her husband, Richard W. Joly of Arlington, Mass.; three grandchildren, Margaret L. Vossler of Arcade, N.Y., Erik R. Vossler of North Port, Florida and Jackson Michel Littrell of Athol, Mass.; three great-grandchildren, Rachel Ann Stoddard, Ryan John Snyder and Rob Theodore Snyder. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Edward B. Roickle Jr. of Syracuse, N.Y.; and her sister, Charlotte Deckro of Fonda, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, NY, with Rev. Karen Patterson presiding. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats, Fonda, N.Y. on Thursday. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday prior to the funeral service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
