Police investigating fires at barn

MINDEN – New York state police said two suspicious fires occurred over the weekend at the site of a barn where more than 50 dogs were removed earlier this month.

Investigator Darryl Bazan said police received calls on two separate incidents where a suspicious fire occurred at a barn at 7145 Route 5S. Bazan said people driving past the barn reported the fires.

Bazan said investigations into the fires are still ongoing.

More than 50 dogs were found in the barn, with no heat and frozen water, earlier this month. Many suffered from several illnesses, police said, and one dog died.

A search warrant was executed at the barn Jan. 2 at 7145 Route 5S.

Police said complaints regarding the animals were filed with the Fort Plain village police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigator Thomas Gibney, who is handling the animal abuse allegations, said Joseph, Diane and Paul Marriott, have not been charged.
