Mary “Mayme” Kiffney, 96, of Johnstown, N.Y., died on Jan. 15, 2013, at Nathan Littauer Hospital. Mary, born in New York City on February 9, 1916, was the daughter of the late Agnes Szumowski and Anthony Konysz.
Mrs. Kiffney resided in Fulton County for most of her life. She graduated from Gloversville High School in 1933 and took several business courses. In her earlier years, Mary worked as an executive secretary. As a longtime communicant of St Patrick’s Church, Mary was a member of the Rosary Society. She also was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge groups including the Colonial Bridge Club and the Fulton County Bridge League. She was a member of the Chat-A-While Club, the Nick Stoner Golf Club, and she served as treasurer of the Johnstown Hospital Auxiliary for several years. Mary was married in 1941 to John Kiffney who predeceased her in 1992. She also was predeceased by her sons, John Frances in 1987 and William in 2012. Additionally, Mary was predeceased by her brother, Frank Konysz in 1978; and her sister, Helen Johnson in 2009.
Mrs. Kiffney is survived by her daughter-in-law, Janet Kiffney of Latham; her granddaughter, Karen Kiffney of Cambridge, Mass.; her grandson, Michael (Arista) Kiffney; and two great-grandchildren of Vienna, Va.
Mary also is survived by several loving nieces and a loving nephew. During her long life, Mayme touched the lives of many people who will miss her kindness and gentle nature. Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Ehle Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in the spring.
