Lapi advances to Eastern States quarters
LOCH SHELDRAKE – Brandon Lapi picked up two wins Friday at 132 pounds and qualified for today’s quarterfinals at the Eastern States Championships at Sullivan County Community College.
Lapi, the third seed in his weight class, punched his ticket to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over Garden City’s Jack Reina, the 14th seed. Lapi will faced sixth-seeded Chris Mauriello of Happauge this morning.
Lapi opened the tournament by pinning Fox Lane’s Frank Surace in 2:55.
James Marquez (160), who entered the tournament as the 13th seed, will wrestle in a fourth-round consolation match today against Port Jervis’ Travis Edwards, the 12th seed.
Marquez reached the third round before his hopes for a title were dashed by the fourth-seed, Westfield’s Stephen Aiello, who picked up an 8-1 win.
Marquez opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Minisink Valley’s Amon Gervais and followed that with a pinfall victory in 1:43 over Longwood’s Vincent Feliciano. Marquez won his first consolation match, a 7-3 victory over Scarsdale’s Joe Koshakow.
Dal Oregno (138) advanced to the second round before he was defeated by the 15th seed – Nanuet’s Matt Dillon, 4-2. He won his opening round match, 12-6, over Half Hollow Hills’ Aramis Broadis. He opened the wrestlebacks with a 7-6 win over Yorktown’s Alec Tapia. He was pinned by Yorktown’s Zach Tepper in 1:17 in the third consolation round.
Ian Alejandro (120) suffered a 3-0 loss to open the tournament to Garden City’s Timmy Schmelzinger before winning his first match in the wrestlebacks, a pinfall victory over John Jay-Cross River in 3:17. His tournament came to an end in the third round of wrestlebacks, where he was defeated 10-2 by Horace Greeley’s Kirby Atlas.
Chris Valazquez (106), the 15th seed, lost both his matches. He was pinned by Middletown’s Pedro Rosales in 5:23 and then lost in the wrestlebacks to 16th seeded Nicky Garone of Eastport-South Manor, in 2:04.
Ken Garcia (195) also went 1-2, losing his first match of the day to Brooklyn Tech’s Kevin Tynes, 4-3. He came back to defeat Shoreman’s Max Goldfarb in the first round of wrestlebacks in 34 seconds. However his tournament ended by a 7-1 loss to Glens Falls’ Andre Maxam.
Rob Santiago (170) also went two-and-out, drawing the No. 1 seed, Troy Seymour of Peru, who pinned him in 2:24. Santiago was then eliminated by Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Brandon Boomhower, 10-3.
