Austin William Hogan
Austin William Hogan, PhD, 76, of Barton Road, Piermont, N.H., died on Monday, January 7, 2013, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born in Johnstown, N.Y., September 26, 1936, the son of Austin Seaman and Gladys (Weeper) Hogan.
Austin graduated from Fultonville High School in 1954. He attended college in New York at Maritime College then graduated with a degree in physics from Harpur College in Binghamton, N.Y. He defended his Doctoral thesis at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan in 1976.
From April 1962 through April 1964, Austin served in the U.S. Army attached to USA Biological Laboratory in various capacities.
Austin had a varied professional career working for, among other organizations, Grumman, ALCO, Department of Atmospheric Science at SUNY Albany, and CRREL as an engineer, researcher, consultant, and geophysicist. Austin enjoyed working in many cold and snowy locations, including the village of Igloolik in Canada, Greenland, the North Atlantic Ocean, Barrow, Alaska, and the South Pole, which he visited multiple times performing atmospheric research.
In 1985 he became editor of the journal Atmospheric Research and in 1994 was awarded Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. Austin retired from CRREL in 1996. For many years following his retirement, he was the editor of Parker Pages, the journal of the Parker Gun Collectors Association.
Austin enjoyed canoeing, fishing, and tying flies. He was an avid collector of antique guns. He was a precision rifle shooter and during his retirement, shot skeet and trap at the Grafton County Fish and Game Club. He was a member of the Piermont Volunteer Fire Department for many years and a past member of the Aetna Fire Company No. 1 in Fonda, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his parents, Austin and Gladys Hogan.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Hogan, of Piermont, to whom he was married on April 7, 2001. He is also survived by: two daughters, A. Carolyn Hogan of Fultonville, N.Y. and Alice Baudoin and husband, Eric, of Clarksburg, Md.; by a son, Austin Lansing Hogan and wife, Shannon, of Fonda, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Lukas Wilmot and Luke and Leia Baudoin; an uncle, William Weeper Sr.; a special cousin, William Weeper Jr.; and several other cousins.
Calling hours will be on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H.
A funeral service will be on Saturday, January 12, at 11 a.m. at the Piermont Congregational Church, 101 Church Street, Piermont, N.H., with the Rev. Mal Kircher officiating.
Burial will be conducted in the spring at the convenience of the family.
