Write-in candidates could play part on BID board
GLOVERSVILLE – The annual meeting of the membership of the Gloversville District Management Association – operated and known as a Business Improvement District – has been set by its Board of Directors for Jan. 29 at 8 a.m.
The BID is expected to hold elections for this year’s board at the meeting.
The meeting also will feature the annual report of the board of directors for the 2012 operating year.
After the board is established at the meeting, the Board Development Committee will provide a list of officers to be nominated for 2013. The officer positions include president, vice president, treasurer and secretary.
The proposed slate of members for the BID Board of Directors is as follows: Diane Wood, Jackson Hewitt; William Meyers, West & Co.; Don Savoie, The Adirondack Wood Floor Co.; Karen Smith, Schine Memorial Hall; Linda Hinkle, Micropolis Gallery; Sharon Jenkins, Fulton-Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce; Richard Samrov, Gloversville Performing Arts Center; Chris Curro, Mohawk Harvest Co-op; Michael McAllister, Sky Heart Studio; Donna Kenney, The Leader-Herald; Mike Teetz, Glove City Realty; Carole Gottung, NBT Bank; JoAnn Smith of Key Bank and any write-in candidates.
“I don’t know how many people will actually be on the board at this point,” BID Treasurer William Meyers said.
Meyers said the bylaws of BID said the board needs to be made up of a minimum of 15 members and a maximum of 25 members. Meyers also said he is expecting at least the minimum number of members because of the write-in option on the ballot.
Every member of BID has the ability to vote, which includes owners of properties or businesses within the district.
The district includes properties on: Main Street, from Prospect Avenue to Vine Street; on Church, Middle, Bleecker, East and West Fulton streets; on North Arlington Avenue and on Washington Street.
The news release said all ballots must be returned by mail or in person by Jan. 28 by 5 p.m. The ballots can be mailed or dropped off to the Gloversville BID, c/o the Fulton-Montgomery County Regional Chamber of Commerce, located at 2 N. Main St.
Elected directors will serve through 2013 until the next annual meeting in 2014.
The BID Board of Directors comprises representatives of owners and tenants within the district. The city provides three members of the BID board representing the offices of the mayor, Common Council and commissioner of finance. These representatives are appointed by their respective offices.
The Board of Directors’ purpose is to oversee the special assessment revenues intended to fund infrastructure improvements within the district not otherwise provided for, including enhanced sanitation, sidewalk snow removal, security services, landscaping, tree and flower planting and maintenance, planters, trash receptacles, store and parking signage and seasonal decorations, as well as such services as promotions, marketing and education.
The BID members meet monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 8 a.m. at the offices of the Fulton-Montgomery County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The BID was established by the city on Feb. 6, 2001, as an independent, not-for-profit organization that works with property owners, businesses, arts and cultural groups, social service providers, government agencies and elected officials to revitalize and promote downtown Gloversville.
This past year, BID held the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and beautification of downtown with flowers, current BID President Diane Wood said.
In 2011, it provided funding to the city for additional painting of sidewalk crossings and pedestrian signs and contributed more than $2,500 to the construction of a police booth on Main Street.
“We didn’t do anything real big [in 2012], but [for 2013] we have had [a] discussion of having a bandstand built on Main Street,” Wood said.
