John J. Sajdak

Mr. John J. Sajdak, 87, of State Highway 161, town of Florida, died peacefully Sunday, January 6, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Scotch Bush, N.Y., he was the son of the late John and Rose Cebula Sajdak.

A lifelong area resident, John attended local schools. He worked on the family farm early in his life. He then owned and operated John J. Sajdak General Contracting for over 30 years. Following retirement, John worked for the town of Florida part time.

A devout member of the former St. Casimir’s Church, John was an active parishioner. He served on several committees and was an usher and Eucharist Minister. John was also called upon for his building and maintenance expertise helping in any facet that he could. He was the treasurer of the former South Chuctanunda Fish & Game Club and was a member of the Sacandaga Swingers Dance Club. He was also active with the Boy Scouts Troop 48 and enjoyed being a part of the group with his sons. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Edna Mikenas Sajdak; four children, Cheryl (Gary) Minerley of Duanesburg, N.Y., John T. (Marlene) Sajdak of Hadley, N.Y., Nancy Sajdak of Amsterdam, N.Y. and Michael Sajdak of Greenville, S.C.; two grandsons, Travis and Tyler Minerley; one stepgrandson, Adrian Pettit; and one stepgreat-grandson, Joslen Pettit; two brothers, Edward (Joan) Sajdak and Chester (June) Sajdak, all of town of Florida; and two sisters, Florence (Buddy) Bryant of Scotch Bush, N.Y. and Dorothy Szurek of Amsterdam, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was predeceased by his siblings, Bernice Kilinski, Winifred Mosconi, Felicia Lavicka, Clara Sweet and Raymond Sajdak.

The Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 9:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, St. John Street, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Pascal Iannotti as celebrant. Interment will take place in St. Casimir’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
