Braves win six matches in loss

FONDA – With four forfeits, the Fonda-Fultonville wrestling team faced an uphill task Thursday in its Colonial Council match against Watervliet.

The Braves lost the match 46-30, but won six of the 11 contested weight classes.

“We had some guys come through with some big wins tonight,” Fonda-Fultonville coach Matthew Lewis said. “We just gave up too many forfeits. It’s just brutal to start the match knowing you’re already behind. The score is what it is because of the forfeits.”

Riley Withkowski (106 pounds), Frank Capone (182), Zeby Romano (195) and Tyler White (220) all won by forfeit for the Cannoneers.

Watervliet also got pinfall victories from Anthony Mosca (126) and Brian Delaney (138).

The rest of the Cannoneers’ wins came via a pair of decisions and a major decision.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we did what we had to do,” Watervliet coach Dennis Lane said.

Dom Mancini (145), Ryan Park (152), Richard Bagley (160) and Eric Moyer (285) all won by pinfall for Fonda-Fultonville, while Thomas TenEyck (120) and Robert Bagley (170) won by decision.

The match began with Witkowski collecting a forfeit for the Cannoneers to make it 6-0. Charles LaBelle followed with a 7-0 win over Fonda-Fultonville’s Kelsey Gray.

TenEyck put the Braves on the board for the first time, posting a hard-fought 8-4 decision over David Gleason at 120 pounds.

Mosca extended the Watervliet lead to 15-3 by pinning Jackson Simpson in 1:09 before Derek Gleason posted a 10-0 major decision over the Braves’ Jake Boyer to make it 19-3.

Delaney pinned Fonda-Fultonville’s Mike Murphy in 3:00 to push the Cannoneers’ lead to 25-3.

The Braves pulled to within four points after three straight pins by Mancini, Park and Richard Bagley. Mancini pinned Rich Razzano in 56 seconds, Park pinned Travis Hogan in 3:22 and Richard Bagley pinned Tyler Touzin in 3:06.

Robert Bagley got the Braves within a point at 25-24 with a 6-3 decision over Paul Gordon at 170 pounds.

However, Watervliet sealed the win with three straight forfeit wins by Capone, Romano and White at 182, 195 and 220 pounds to make the score 43-24.

Moyer claimed the Braves’ final win of the night, pinning Tyler Chasten in 3:02.

In the final match of the night, Watervliet’s Lucien Loeper outlasted Kyle Gray, 7-5, at 99 pounds.

“Our young guys wrestled well,” Lewis said. “The kids did everything we asked them to do.”

Fonda-Fultonville (6-7 overall, 1-3 Colonial) will travel to the Saratoga Springs Tournament on Saturday.
